We went to our pediatrician today and she told us to give our 1-month old an ounce of prune juice every day, mixed with an equal amount of water. I meant to ask her, but how long does it take for him to start passing softer stools and will the prune juice make him gassy?

He was only having a bowel movement every 4-5 days before today, which shouldn't happen for another couple months.

It depends. Since every case is different it could take a few hours or a day. My daughter went through that too. I don't remember it making her gassy but she had some trouble passing her first stool after starting the mixture. Then she was fine. We eventually had to change her formula to someting with less iron. It's not always the same for every child so just keep an eye on him.
If something causes you great concern maybe you can call the office or even local hospital and ask a pediatric nurse...they may have some advice too. Poor baby hope things go smoothly. I know how miserable that can be for them. Good Luck!

Karo syrup wont hurt your baby at all. The darker the better or even the pancake syrup. Just a little bit in her bottle (1/2 tsp.) will help. That is what they used in the old days and you don't use it all the time. Just till she has a bm. If she is really bad, in the old days they used a mild sliver of soap up the baby's bottom but now you can buy suppositories for that (ask your druggist). I would say the baby prune juice and if she isn't used to juices, mix half and half with the juice and water.

I would be careful with the prune juice. Although it helps, the first few times his tummy will hurt. We mixed half of an ounce with a lot of water. Half and half was too much for his belly and we regreted that for days! He should go within 24 hours. Also, it doesn't taste good, taste it yourself to see what he is drinking.. so you may have to give it to him like medicine if he won't drink it. good luck!! Try Pedialite (sp?).. it helps flush the system too and it tastes good :)

prune juice is fine watered down for a baby. It will work after the first time you give it to him. It just helps clear their system out. Don't worry about giving it to them. It's better than not going poo for five days and having that in your tummy.

doctors usually aren't dieticians. I have a lot of kids. six. giving them juice that young seems a little shakey. if you do try it his or her stool prolly would be softer the next time or two. however i would be careful their lil digestive system really has a lot of work to do . I think adding just plain water to your young ones diet before bed may make his morning movement a lttlle easier to. also adding water or juice may cause more wet diapers really wet one also! goodluck!

I gave this to my daughter at that age and she began passing softer stools that same day. Once she became regular, I stopped the juice . I didnt want that to be part of her diet at that age.

Ugh hope you are looking for a doctor because prune juice isn't safe for a 1 month old.
