like in the following sentence:
Students who have study halls should be able to go to lunch because both periods are "free periods."

oh and i also do not want to change the sentence completely...but thanks...i know im asking for a lot but i just need a synonym...i cant seem to think of any though

Students should be able to go to lunch because it is not a mandatory part of school.

Would "leisure activities" do? But it sounds too relaxing.
I think classes would be fine here too.

Time, interval, duration, term, span, time span, stretch, session. Of course, you'll have to play with the other wording as well...
