segments; class sessions;

Maybe you could write: Students who have study halls should be able to use that time for lunch as both are considered free periods

My dear Love Fairy, the closest you can come to a synonym of "period" in an academic sense, is "block". A period is a block of time set apart for a certain activity. In school, a period begins and ends at specified times. It is, in a way, time that is blocked off from all other times. Therefore, your sentence should read something like this: "Students who have blocked time for study hall should not be able to go to lunch during the study hall block because, in the time blocked for lunch for a student is expected to get food for his/her body while other time is blocked for study so that a student can get food for his/her mind. Neither time-block is unstructured or free-form."
