Do you take it from how that person writes, hold out all judgement until you can uncover it, guess from the username, simply apply all people to have the same sex as you until proven otherwise, or do you use some other means?
Remember: "I look at the avatar" is not an option.

And, also, what do you think I am?

Hmmm... Most of the time the type of words and expressions used uncovers it. Women tend to use a larger range or words while men use the same words a lot to describe similar things (it is also statistically proven that women use over a thousand different words a day while men use only a little over half of that).

The grammar doesn't really tell much, though older people tend to have better grammar than the younger generation.

I think that when I try to decide a person's gender I usually go with the "withold all judgment until it can be uncovered" method or I just don't really bother at all. Especially on YahooAnswers I'm more interested on the question asked or the answer given than I am in the genders of people. However, if it isn't evident and it comes to a time where I have to say he/she, I just say "he/she" and then ask.

Finally, I think you are a male. Are you?

You are a girl is my guess. From looking at your picture, it's too small to make out, but I see pink in there. Also, you said "simply apply all people to have the same sex as you until proven otherwise", but I, being male, think of it as assuming every1 to be male until proven otherwise, not whatever sex I am, but I guess thats cuz im a guy, and usually I'm just playing video games where mostly everyone is a guy. I hope my guess is right :)

I just consider every1 to be male until proven otherwise. In many places (like I said, online games), you'll be getting corrected a lot if you assume every1 to be girl, and I guess vica versa in places I don't usually go. O and if its got anything to do with porn, its a guy lol.

My answer to a question has no bearing on gender - but some questions tend to make one wonder when all blank avatars are male . I would guess you are male .

Gender is not something I worry about. I take the person at their word... if they are ambiguous, I don't worry about that either. Opinion is opinion... brains are brains... and perspective is not limited to merely gender.

I have no idea which you are... but you like collies?

based on the fact that you'd ask such a question, i'd assume you were a woman, but looking at the user name, i wouldn't know.

Yes, words - symbols used (?,: >, !!!, OMG, ###, ****), tone, and cause (what they're trying to tell) give lots away.
