Pandora's box, in Greek mythology, was a present given from the gods to Pandora. Let me start at the beginning of the tale.
Pandora was the first woman, created by Zeus as part of the punishment to mankind regarding Prometheus's theft of fire(don't worry about that part). According to the story, Zeus presented Pandora with a highly decorated box with a warning to never open it. However, it was said that Pandora received too much curiosity (people say that's where women get their curiosity from) and so, she opened the box. Out of the box came greed, vanity, jealousy, hatred, and other horrible things that are now so commonly found in today's world. Well, the only good thing in the box was hope. In grief-filled times, the only consolation and bright light is hope.

Pandora's box was given to her by the gods and it held all the ills of the universe. Pandora was told she must never open it but human nature being what it is and she being dead nosy she opened the box and released all the ills into the world. When she realised what was happening she closed the box but heard a knocking. Human nature kicked in again and she re-opened the box and found Hope.

Pandora's father, Zeus, sent her out into the world with a beautiful box, and said, whatever you do DO NOT OPEN THIS BOX. Well, she couldn't help herself, and she opened it. This brought out chaos and distruction through all the lands. If she wasn't so curious...we wouldn't have the bad stuff like that today. Well, that is how I heard it anyway.

Pandora was a Greek mythological person who opened the box that contained all the miseries known to mankind. The story has been used to explain and differentiate between good and evil.

It's an ancient Greek myth on which the more elaborate myth of Adam & Eve was probably based on later by a bunch of medieval monks. A case of plagarism me thinks. Pandora though suffered a worse fate for filling the world with crap... she had her guts ripped out by a vulture.

Zeus told Hephaestus (Vulcan) to "mingle together all things loveliest, sweetest, and best, but look that you also mingle therewith the opposites of each." So Hephaestus took gold and dross, wax and flint, pure snow and mud of the highways, honey and gall; he took the bloom of the rose and the toad's venom, the voice of laughing water and the peacocks squall; he took the seas beauty and its treachery, the dog's fidelity and the wind's inconstancy, and the mother bird's heart of love and the cruelty of the tiger. All these, and other contraries past number, he blended cunningly into one substance and this he molded into the shape that Zeus had described to him. She was as beautiful as a goddess and Zeus named her Pandora which meant "all gifted".

Zeus breathed upon her image, and it lived. Zeus sent her to wed Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus, and although Prometheus had warned his brother never to accept gifts from the Olympians, Epimetheus was love-stricken, and he and Pandora wed. The Gods adorned the couple with many wedding gifts, and Zeus presented them with a beautifully wrought box. When Pandora opened the box, all suffering and despair was unleashed upon mankind.

According to the myth, Pandora opened a container releasing all the miseries of mankind—greed, vanity, slander, envy, pining—leaving only hope inside.

the story of pandora's box is the story of a girl named pandora, and or a rather oridinary looking box (or in some stories it is pretty and decorated), that she is told never to open...now tell someone never to do something,...child or not...so she opens the box one day, and all the daemons of hell and the nether world are loosed...made things "interesting".
