A Kakuro puzzle resembles a crossword puzzle, except that you solve it with numbers instead of words. The clues are given in the grid itself, by numbers above and below slashes like this: \ The number above the slash refers to the Across entry next to the square, and the number below refers to the Down entry below the square.

These numbers represent the sum of the digits you must enter into the given squares. You use the digits 1 through 9 (no zeroes), but you may not use any digit more than once in the same entry.

When you start solving Kakuro, you'll use quite a bit of addition and subtraction, but as you get used to them, you'll rely less on math and more on logic. For instance, if you have an entry of three blanks with the sum of 7, you know that the digits have to be 1, 2, and 4, and you need only to use the crossing entries to figure out which goes where. If the sum were 8, you wouldn't have complete information, but you know that one of the digits must be 1, because the sum of the next three numbers is too high.

That should get you started. Have fun!

Fish can and do get cancer all the time. Please don't tell people that they can't get it.
