The Proud and Powerful Mayan Civilizations were destroyed by disease and war ...mostly due to the expansion of its foreign invaders from Spain and the other parts of Europe. They broke the control that they had over these lands from all levels of commerce and trade.Although at first the Spaniards had a tough time they eventually won over with superior equipment and weapons!!! Other tribes from rivaled lands also helped the would be "God Like" invaders!
It was only a matter of time!!

In years past it was thought that a breakdown in society caused the collapse of the Mayan Empire. It was thought that then the occupants deserted the cities and particularly their capital at CHITZEN ITZA and their other major cities which included ATLAN.
However we have since found out that it was destroyed somewhat in the 11th century B.C. or there abouts by a Toltec alliance which included Aztecs. This was what was known as the TEPANICAN ALLIANCE. It was ruled by Toltecs from the city of TULAN. They had replaced the Olmecs with their capital at TEOCHUALAN. It was this Tepanican alliance that came down and smashed the Mayan Empire.
After this the Toltecs ruled for about three centuries before they inturn were smashed by the Emire of The Triple Alliance(THE AZTEC EMPIRE) This comprised of three cities: TECHNOCHITULAN, TEXACOCO, and TLCOPAN. The Tepanican Alliances then ceased to exsist and were under the Aztec Empire which was in turn conquered by the Spanniards c1522 A.D. The last outpost, ROTTENCANE, fell in 1545. The Toltecs guided and fought for Cortez, to get back at the Aztecs.
Hope this helps.

The height of their civilization had ended long before the Spanish arrived in 1519. It declined around the year 800. But the people didn't vanish; there are many people of Mayan descent still living in Guatemala and the Yucatan part of Mexico.
