Is anyone able to tell me how Star Wars, A New Hope demonstrates one of the Four Functions of Mythoogy?
1 Cosmological Function
2 Mystical Function
3 Sociological Function
4 Pedagogical Function

Thanks

A New Hope is very much a pedagogical function myth, as it shows the rite of passage of a youth to a man (from commoner to hero) as he leaves home (indeed, becomes orphaned), encounters a mentor (Obi-wan), encounters the anti-hero (the cynical mercenary Han Solo), fights monsters in the underworld (dianoga in the trash compactor, stormtroopers in the Death Star) and escapes from the underworld, rescuing a captive princess. It also shows a bit of other stages of life - as Obi-wan is an old man and dies and then returns in a voice to still guide Luke.

For a sociological function, it shows what behavior and ideas are considered good, and what behavior and ideas are considered evil. Oppression and dictatorship are shown as evil, while fighting for freedom and loyalty to one's friends are considered good. The authority (government) may not be good.

For the cosmological function (showing how everything came to be, and what everything means), there's not a lot of explanation except a little about the Force, and a little about the origin of the Empire -- an evil government replacing a good government. There is something to be said for establishing that the golden days were in the past, and we are not living in that better era.

Mystical/Metaphysical function - explanation of the Force and the dark side of the force to help explain notions of power, responsibility, good and evil. The symbols of the jedi: being both like monks and like knights - both having a code to live by, which includes selflessness.

Hope this helps!

The ability to tap into a force that is incompressible to the majority of people.
Explore your own Aura and how you are able to manipulate it to help others as well as to tap into the universal power source, and this will more than answer your questions

I like Truthbe Told's answers. I would just like to point out in answer no. 2... Yoda is not in 'a new hope'.

Mystical function -- the Force is magical.
Pedagogical function -- Luke learns how to accomplish what he must, and we learn by watching him.
