Maybe your hard drive is old. Why don't you buy a new and fast one?

What is you OS? Windoz 95, 98 and ME had a lot of trouble because of the background processes. I never had any luck defragging in safe mode but, if you have any of the 3 above, you can hit f8 at boot up and go to command prompt, go to C:\ and type scandisk c:, when this is finished type defrag c:, if it doesn't find these commands go to c:\dos and try it. Running the full scandisk will take an hour or so but I would recommend it if your HD is a couple of years old. If you loaded the upgrade version this will work on 95 and 98, I'm not sure about ME or the full version (can't remember that far back). Hope this helps.

I would do a "Chk Dsk" to check for errors first.
Before you click defragment look at what % of your hard drive has free space on it. Windows recomends that you have atleast 15% free space on your hard drive before defragmenting it.
Some computers take a while before you defrag it has to "analyze". Analyzing does not have a progress bar. You might just have to wait for it to do that (on a medium speed PC and a really big hard drive it could take up to 10 mins!)
After analyzing it will give you the progress bar and the "what your hard drive will look like after defragmentation" Diagram
If your computer persists to lock up then there is an error with windows. That could lead to MANY new solutions.
Post again if this is what happens, the last thing you want is to have to format your computer. so good luck!!

I know you may be wanting free, if so, follow what the other guys said, do a check disk first, then run it. The errors do need to be fixed before defraging. If you want to get it done and never have to worry about it again. Buy diskkeeper. Great program, does not work on Vista yet though.

Some PC,s do a lot better if you boot into
safe mode, for defrag, and scan disk.
