The risks of birth defects goes up as you get older.

There are many risks. The biggest being fetal abnormalities such as Downs Syndrome. There is also a higher risk of pre term labor and increased chance of miscarriage as well as c-section. The mother would probably be seen by a paranatologist in addition to her regular ob. Even though the risks are great for both mom and baby, she could also have a healthy pregnancy, but it's vital to have good prenatal care even before she gets pregnant.

You could certainly still have a baby, but you should understand that as a woman ages (and especially after the age of 35) her risk for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome and Trisomy 18 do rise. There are various prenatal tests that can predict your risk level once you become pregnant, and you can have an amniocentesis to be absolutely certain about the genetic make-up of your child.

Please do yourself a favor and read about the alpha-feta protein (AFP) quad screen before you become pregnant (if possible). Understand the test before you blindly agree to take it. Also, think about whether or not you are prepared to love and parent a special needs child.

But to reiterate, you can have a baby if you are still ovulating! Take a prenatal vitamin with plenty of folic acid and clean up your act while you are trying to conceive (healthy diet, exercise, no drugs/alcohol, etc.) And please remember that birth defects can occur in any pregnancy--older women have an elevated risk for them, but plenty of young women also deliver babies with trisomy disorders. Just educate yourself!

Best of luck.

After the age of 35, the risks of defects and problems go up. 45 is definitely a risky age to have a baby, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to have a healthy baby at 45.
