Without being too graphic, there are several ways in which a husband might wish to satisfy his wife. If he is unable to fulfill her needs in the boudoire using the most traditional method, manual stimulation might be his only option. That Curly kept his hand soft for his wife may indicate that he is less of a man because of an inability (or unwillingness) to perform the sex act to her satisfaction. In short, Curly may be one literary example of a man in desperate need of a little blue pill.

The overseer, boss, put petroleum jelly in his glove to keep his hands soft for his wife. The dirt might symbolize the fruitlessness of keeping his hands clean (Ala Pontius Pilot) or it might reflect his wife's infidelities. Just guesses, haven't read the novel in awhile.

I believe you mean filling his glove with vaseline. I think that character's name was Curley. He filled his left glove with vaseline to keep that hand smooth for his wife.
