The fact that they are checking your references is a good sign. If you bombed the interview, your application and references would be in the trash by now.
The company is checking your references because they are considering you for a position. You should make contact with all of your references and let them know they will receive a phone call soon from X company and thank them for making every effort to speak with the person who will be calling.
They told you that checking references is not a guarantee of employment, because it is not. Just one necessary step closer to getting the job. They are just being honest.
Good luck.

I guess they don't want you to get your hopes up. But so far you have made it past the screening phase when they check your application, you have made it through the interview and clearly made enough of an impression they wish to check up on you. So now you are at the reference stage where they see what your references think of you. Sounds like things are going in the right direction.
They would not bother to call your references unless they were considering you. So I would take this as a good thing.

I use to do allots of interviewing and when we would call someone for more references, it means that there are several people with equal experience.
What the reference would say about the persons work habits, attendance, working with others, quality of work, meeting dead lines, etc. this could be the deciding factor on who would be offered the job.

They asked for references which seems to indicate that you made the first cut, but they don't want you to get ahead of yourself. There are probably other candidates for the job that also did well, now they need to consider all things, including your references. Don't be discouraged, I think it is a positive sign that things are going okay. GOOD LUCK

It means you are still in the running. They probably have more than one candidate on a shortlist now and seeing what the referees say about characters and suitability before they make a final choice. My view is that you have done well, you may also be called for a second / final interview to wrap up a few points!
Good luck!
