Do you have a Bridezilla on your hands?
Bird seed is popular, and better for the birds. If they eat the rice it can kill them. Bubbles are good, too. Party City has wedding bubbles, small bottles to give out to the well wishers. Tissue paper flowers are also nice, but you have to clean them up after.
As for the rice/bird issue, I think it is the amount they eat that is a problem, as they probably would not get that much rice in the wild.

Bubbles!
Actually the bride has a legitimate concern. Rice is harmful to the birds who will eat it. Also, while it is true that we live in a land of abundance and rice is cheap, it seems somewhat appalling to be throwing away food when there are others in the world literally starving to death.
Bubbles make a wonderful environmentally friendly alternative.

Depends on the "condition" of the bride. Try this customized list!
1)If the bride is dieting throw Special K.
2)If she is a health nut throw Grape nuts.
3)If she has high cholesterol throw Cherrios.
4If she's wacky throw Fruit Loops.
5)If she hasnt gone in a while throw Fiber One
6)If she has a dog throw Kibbles and Bits!

Unfortunately, now a days a lot of churches and receptions houses won't allow rice or confetti or anything like that to be thrown at their venues for many reasons (mainly the mess left behind and the possibility of people slipping and hurting themselves with rice on steps etc)
So don't be too hard on her.It might not be her choice.
Bubbles are definately the go. They look beautiful in photos too.

Since you're obviously going for sarcasm here, a list of things you can throw that would be even worse than rice or chunks of raw meat.
Razor blades
Boiling hot soup
Crisco
Pig's blood
Bricks
Shuriken
Fishhooks
and my personal favorite:
Hand grenades
P.S. the rice kills birds by swelling up in their digestive systems... blah blah you already know that. Go with bird seed. It's eco-friendly and kills two birds with one stone. (bad pun)

ooh that would be stinky! They don't throw rice because it's bad for the birds. Try blowing bubbles instead of chunking raw meat. :)

Throw hershey kisses and ruin her dress as everyone makes a mad dash to pick them up ... j/k.
Rice isn't necessary to throw, and if you understand the legend of the ceremony, the rice or grain (usually wheat) was tossed and good fortune, and when it bounced off the bride, children would gather the rice or grain as good fortune. It's be better to shower the couples by blowing bubbles or praying for their good fortune than leaving a mess to clean up.

By the way, the rice thing is a myth. It will not harm birds. Birds have been eating rice in the wild forever. No harmful effects. A lot of churches banned the rice because of the cleanup factor and somehow this exploding birds thing got tagged on it.

you could throw rose petals the white petals or even red or blue something that goes with the color of the wedding. Ask the bride what kind of flowers does she likes and throw it at the wedding.

Birds eat the rice, the rice expands inside the bird and kills it.
My wife and I got ballons in our wedding colors and as we exited the church everyone had a ballon and let it go. It was pretty cool seeing hundreds of ballons floating up into the air like that!
Just an idea for her. :)
