I've always used pads (I'm 27). I tried tampons a couple of times and they were uncomforatble, so gave up. I probably wasn't doing something right.

Some people don't prefer tampons, and others can find them hard to get used to. I think it's unusual to be 20 and not know how to use one, but you can learn if you are interested. If you buy some, there are instructions on the box.

Some (like tampax) come with an applicator - you insert the applicator into your vagina and then push on the plunger part, and it pushes the tampon inside you. Others (like OB) just come with the tampon and you push them in with a finger. Most tampons are about the width of a small finger.

One common fear about tampons is that you will lose one inside of your body. That is not possible because the vagina is closed at the other end, and it's not very deep. If you are not comfortable with your vagina (maybe you are a virgin) then you may want to touch it with your fingers (perhaps with a lubricant like KY liquid or even just vaseline is OK) and become more familiar with your anatomy.

But using pads is fine too.

Yes, this is completely normal and nothing to stress about. If you'd like to learn how to use tampons, I'd suggest parking yourself in your bathroom with a hand-held mirror and a box of the slimest tampons you can find (look for ones designed for teens that have plastic applicators). The tampons come with a pamphlet that explains how to insert them, along with a diagram, and the key is just to take your time and stay relaxed.

But if for some reason this is too intimidating for you, you might consider seeing a doctor (you should be getting regular pelvic exams by age 20 anyway) and asking them for help with learning how to insert them. It's definitely nothing to be embarrassed about, and all of us who DO use tampons all had to go through the learning process just like you! Good luck!

Well.... I'm 12 and I feel that way but I have only had it twice and when summer comes around I will try a tampon. Just ask help from your doctor maybe if your that scared.

If you are still a virgin then those tampons might a bit unconfy.. YOu have to stick those tampons way up there for them to do any good. Just keep using pads.. Yu dont have to be like everyone else. Just protect yourself.

nope./.. i REALLY recommend using tampons i LOVE them like a trillion times better then pads... start off with a regular absorbancy( start off with a plastic applicator, they are a whole lot easier to insert.. and i prefer playtex gentle glide, try those ) and read the pamphlet that comes inside the box and practice inserting it until you get it in ..
