i bought my xbox 360 gold membership card this evening and tried to get online.?

Question

(I removed the pc ethernet from my modem and insterted the Xbox 360 ethernet cable.) My ISP is ntl. When i tried to complete the sign in process i couldn't fulfil the full checklist. It said, and i quote:
"Your console was unable to negotiate a lease with your DCHP server. Make sure that addresses are available on your server.
This test verifies that your conole has a valid IP address. If your console does not pas this test confirm that there are no other devices on your network with the same IP addresses."

what do i have to do?
