I have never been on a long flight, I am scared, but I want to go, Iive in Kansas City, MO USA. This will be a huge shock for me.

I know how you feel. Won't you stop in Athens? Do try to stay in athens for at least 3 days if you have time, there's lots to see. And then the flight to Chios will only be half an hour or so, from Athens. Chios is lovely, go see the medieval villages, Mesta, Anavatos, Volissos, the nunnery Nea Moni, etc. There are many nice beaches, but in May the water will be very cold, I have to warn you. Also, the food is great, and don't forget to buy some mastiha products and sweets.

My renowned islands might want to be Cyclades. My 1st is Sifnos , then Mykonos, then Santorini and Paros. i love the combination of rocks, white & blue houses, ideal crystal sparkling waters, wonderful bars and eating places, its some thing unique contained in the international, i'll't clarify you in case you havent been there.
