I believe it's a myth. None of my children did this. They were all very active right up until the last. Sometimes in heavy hard fast labor with quick contractions you might not feel the movement as much because of the pain, but it's there.
Any decrease of movement even before labor is seen as a sign of distress, it should be reported immediately, most OB/GYN's instruct patients to call if movement decreases or to come in to the hospital.
The only deep sleep that happens is if the mom recieved some sort of narcotic medication for labor pain, something doctors do not do much of anymore and rarely close to delivery because it decreases activity and can cause breathing problems for the baby following delivery.
It could be this myth you have heard is a throw back of when they used to give women twilight sleep to deliver.
Congratulations and good luck!

I heard the same thing...that when the baby gets quiet, watch out! :)
I do not know if that is true..I also heard that you will get a burst of energy right before labor...My baby moved like a rock star right up until birth..but I was also 1 week and 1 day overdue and he had to be delivered by c-section because I never dilated, but don't worry yourself with all the things you will hear..because there are a million of them! I think everyone has a different story..But I did hear about the not moving thing also, just can't say it happened to me!...good luck!

Some do....my daughter like completely stopped moving right around 39 weeks and wouldn't move for nothing. They did 3 ultrasounds in one week to keep checking on her because she wouldn't move. My friend said her baby kicked and punched even while in labor and right up to it too! Every baby is different I guess! But I know my doctor still told me to report to her if I went more than 8 hours without a movement (after trying a movement check which they would give you instructions for). Good Luck!!

i have had 5 kids and i cant say ive been told about the deep sleep thing but the moving around will cahnge from time to time and should slow down closer to time or at least mine did. it never stopped completely though. if the baby completely stops moving and you dont feel nothing you should see a doctor, the baby should move even its its just a little bit every hour......you could always ask your nurse or mid wife.... i had abook called what to expect when youre expecting and it answers just about everything you would want to know....you might try that too

From what I've heard, it's not so much a deep sleep as the baby might just run out of room to move. adn that's something that is different with each person. The baby might just get to big to move so it'll settle down. Or it might just move the whole way through.

Nope they may slow down moving as they run out of room but the move even when you are in labour. If your baby stops moving completely go to the ER.

It may be true as the baby needs to reserve all of it's energy for the birthing process.
