Crankshaft pulleys are usually torqued on pretty tight. You'll need a big wrench to pull it, and the idea of removing the access cover and putting a big screwdriver or similar object through a hole in the flex plate (flywheel for an automatic) is good. There are also flywheel holding tools. You can probably rent one (maybe even for free) at a local parts store like Auto Zone or Kragen or O'Reilly. Otherwise, see if anyone you know has an air impact wrench and the appropriate socket. Those will often do the job with minimal fuss, but require a compressor and access to the bolt.

Remove the cover from the bottom of the flywheel. Have a friend stick the largest screwdriver known to man across the bottom of the bell housing between two teeth on the flywheel. He should be on the right hand side to do this. Your friend has more leverage at this point. Simply remove the bolt preferably with a half inch breaker bar counter clockwise and you should be OK.

If you can, use an impact. You usually don't need to even hold the pulley then. The impact hits fast enough that the bolt will spin out without turning the motor over.

Either try jamming the pulley with a piwce of wood, or try jamming the flywheel teeth at the rear of the crankshaft.

I tightened the belt really tight and had my friend hold another pulley and the belt. I also soaked it with wd-40 for a few hours.

If you don't have access to an impact gun then try using a breaker bar and striking it with a hammer to break the bolt loose.

There's a special tool you need to use to hold it in place. You can rent it at AutoZone.
