No. Crime figures show that child abductions, murders and abuse numbers have hardly changed in 50 years - just our press reporting of them has got more hysterical. There are about 70 child homicides per year in UK, the vast majority by parents.

On the other hand, road deaths have halved in the past 30 years, yet there are still nearly 1000 children killed on our roads each year.

You are still much more likely to die on the roads than as a result of crime - since road deaths are still falling, it stands to reason that England is becoming safer.

Unfortunately "England As Safe As Ever" doesn't sell papers, while "You're All Going To Be Murdered By Child Molesters And Immigrants" does.

Yes England has become a more dangerous place to live. We seem to be living in a country that protects a criminal. Our society suggests that it is more important to have money than it is to have Knowledge(education). Its too easy for criminals to commit a crime because the sentence's set out by law are not deterring anyone, the sentences are to short. If you look at the ASBO situation kids can commit a crime then get awarded with a ASBO to a kid he has now just got away with the crime, been given an asbo and just gained respect amongst there friends.

No more than in other centuries or era's. Look back at the time of the reformation...dangerous times called for desperate measures. The only difference between now and then is that the now the common man has more of say in his survival whereas in other times the upper class ruled and the fate of the common man was in their hands. From Victorian times things have changed dramatically and the commion man rightly and wrongly have taken justice into their own hands.

It depends what time span we are talking about. In the eighteenth century, for example, people used to dine at about 4pm because it was so dangerous to travel about in a country where footpads and highwaymen abounded. In more recent history, I understand that people were not at all afraid to wander the streets of London at all hours of night seventy years ago. Nowadays one hears of people being attacked in the street broad daylight with nobody daring come to their assistance and middle aged/elderly people are increasingly afraid to go anywhere in the evening. I think that there is no doubt about it: the capital, at least, is becoming increasingly dangerous. It doesn't help that so few criminals nowadays seem to be brought to justice.

I think so. Gone are the days when the kids could roam freely in the streets without being snatched or abused. Even the adults aren't safe, as gun & knife crimes are on the rise. Thanks to Blair, this country has become a much more dangerous place to live in.
