I need some wheat straw. I found some at Michaels, the arts & crafts store, but it is expensive (I need a lot). I was told to visit a feed store, where I would be able to buy it by the bushel for only a few dollars. I also need to pick up some other things (hay and hydrated lime). I live in NYC and have tried the Yellow Pages and Craigslist with no luck.

What are feed stores also known as and where would I locate one?

A feed store is where one goes for supplies for their animals, typically larger ones like horses and also dogs. Go back to your yellow pages and look under pet supplies/retail. NYC may be a little tricky, you may have to leave the city and visit a more rural area. Or, I bet you could approach one of the drivers of the horse carriages they have in central park. Ask where they get supplies for their horse(s).

A feed store is usually found in a rural area, that caters to farmers and
others who raise livestock. They have bulk feeds for horses, chickens,
pigs and rabbits. It will
cost you more than a few dollars for a bushel and
I haven't seen wheat straw for sale yet. It's also geting harder to find feed
stores, the one near us is half a regular hardware store now because
farms are disappearing so they don't deal with as much bulk feed.
You could try a place that sells harnesses for horses or ask at the local mounties
because I'm sure you can get some from the police, call them and ask
for their supplier.

I'm from Kansas. We have several feed stores, but they sell grain feed for animals. If you need straw, try the classified adds in the newspaper. Usually farmers who have excess hay will advertise. You can get large quantities that way. sometimtes straw is harder to come by, especially not during grain harvest. You might also try wheat weaving web sites. We have ladies who actually weave straw into art objects. Since you are from NYC, i'm not sure how close to rural area you are. Another idea is to search out cattle auctions. Before auctions here, hay is sold, but not usually straw. Do you need the straw for bedding, or for decorative bales, etc?

A feed store is a place to buy food for animals in large quantity. You are going to have to leave the city to find a feed store. Rural PA and NJ might be a good bet. Also upstate NY.

I found some listings here:

Looks like there is one off of 17th street by Union Square Park.

Here in Texas we have "feed stores" that sell animal feed and other products. NYC???? no idea but try in the country where people have horses, cows, chickens, etc. There will be a feed store there.
