I prefer to use SmartFTP but there are plenty of other available. Smartftp has an unlimmited trial at http://smartftp.com . You can also use windows explorer to do ftp, once you have the right address in the address bar, check the file menu for a new item labeled login - add your info and you are good to go. Explorer is a little clunky for FTP and doesn't do queues out of the box well.

If you have an internet connection on your laptop, just type the FTP address in your browser (be it Internet Explorer or Firefox);

No special configuration is needed.

Go Start -> Run -> Type "cmd"

on the command prompt, type
ftp "server name " e.g . ftp ftp.this_server.com

and then issue your ftp commands. If you are not adept with "command line" ftp commmands , you can download ftp GUIs at download.com.
