John Lilburne (1614?–August 29, 1657), also known as Freeborn John, was an Agitator in England before, during and after the English Civil Wars of 1642–1650. In his early life he was a Puritan, though towards the end of his life he became a Quaker. His works have been cited in opinions by the United States Supreme Court. Although his enemies called him a “Leveler” he referred to his followers as “Agitators.” At the same time another similar group was created named the “Diggers” and Lilburne’s name has (incorrectly) been associated with them

During the 1990s a Rock Pop group was formed named “The Diggers” and Lilburne’s name has been associated with that group although he was obviously never a member. The Diggers are a post-Brit-pop power-pop band distinguished by their low-key approach. Where their contemporaries played fast-and-loose, they were soft and gentle, which limited the audience for their 1997 debut album, Mount Everest.

John Lilburne was an English revolutionary. A Separatist, he joined the Puritan opposition to Charles I and helped smuggle Puritan pamphlets into England, for which he was imprisoned (1638–40). He became an officer in the Parliamentary army but resigned in 1645 rather than subscribe to the Solemn League and Covenant. He became a master propagandist for the Levelers and criticized Parliament for failing to meet their demands. He was imprisoned (1645–47) but remained very popular with Londoners and was twice acquitted of treason.
I could find nothing that said he or someone with his name is/was the leader of a pop band, although there are two groups influenced by him. A pop punk band named the Diggers and a pop group called the Levellers.
