i went for a job interview last week (IT analyst in a bank) and they called me back saying they want me to come in for another "interview"... well not really interview but they want me to do some "practical task".. the sort of stuff they have you do when you apply for computer-related jobs... any idea what tasks they might have a prospective IT analyst?

Analyze a business problem, such as how to track online orders, and suggest a solution including the type of database software to use and an estimate of how long it will take to program.

It could be most anything. They want to determine your technical skills and how you approach different problems. Do you know what to do, or do you just fumble along, or do you look for answers, or do you try to break down the problem, or do you admit you don't know. Try to distinguish between theoretical answers and practical answers. Being book smart is one thing yet having experience is another.

So, it is a test of skills and personality. For insight into what they might ask, read the job description again.
