Kind of but only up to a certain point. In fact it's been argued that Neanderthals and homo sapiens may have interbred. However a homo sapien (us) probably couldnt breed with an early human like erectus because the genes would be to different (almost like trying to have a child with a monkey)

Scientists are sequencing the neanderthal genome right now to figure this out. Early results look like they may or may not have interbred. They'll need to do a bunch more sequencing before we can know for sure.
Incidentally, early mitochondrial work looked like there was no interbreeding.

There have been intirguing fossils from both Portugal and israel which SUGGEST modern humans did interbreed with H neaderthalis. However, no neaderthal DNA has been identified in modern humans, so it was probably not a "normal" occurance.

from what they say, neanderthals no, probably erectus too
technically a species is defined as animals or plants that can mate and produce fertile offspring.
Lucy was a human, so she and I would be the same species, just like many generations earlier, maybe she was my 200,000 times great grandmother, YOURS TOO

The further you go back in time the less likely it is that the chromosomes would be compatible. No one can tell you far back that is. Humans and Chimpanzees have 98.5% common DNA and can not produce hybrids so there is a hint.

It depends on the chromosomes. If they are the same in the number of chromosomes, I guess they could...but if they are different, I don't believe it would be possible.

Why? Is there a hot neanderthal you are thinking of procreating with?
