In cell biology, a mitochondrion (plural mitochondria) (from Greek μιÏÎ¿Ï or mitos, thread + κοÏ
δÏιον or khondrion, granule) is a membrane-enclosed organelle, found in most eukaryotic cells.[1] Mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants," because they convert food molecules into energy in the form of ATP via the process of oxidative phosphorylation. A typical eukaryotic cell contains about 2,000 mitochondria, which occupy roughly one fifth of its total volume.[2] Mitochondria contain DNA that is independent of the DNA located in the cell nucleus. According to the endosymbiotic theory, mitochondria are descended from free-living prokaryotes.

The mitochondria converts glucose into energy to be used by all the muscles in the body. Thus it acts as a power house and is a very important cell organelle.

The mitochondria are the principal energy source of the cell. Mitochondria convert nutrients into energy as well as doing many other specialized tasks.

Mitochondria are the site of the occurrence of "respiratory chain" for eukarionts, a more efficient system than the one that occurs in bacteria. It results in more ATP´s formed.
Also, they act as a protected storage place for the RNA of the females in the cells.

The mitochondria are the "powerhouses" of the cell. The make and release energy.
There is more great information at this site and some diagrams:

Like the folks are saying uptop- it's the "Powerhouse" of the cell.
Check out the sites if you are required to learn cell parts and cell cycles
