Not being a pessimist will not guarantee that you will be happy. Find a balance between your pessimism and optimism (all one way or the other is irrational). When an issue arises that you feel your response is pessimistic, take time to think about why you feel its pessimistic; is the pessimism based on logical fact or long held negative beliefs.

Look at possible optimistic reactions and between the two find a position that is both logical and rational.

Another thing is to watch the people you are with...if they tend to be pessimistic, you will more than likely do the same. Yes, its an emotional virus we can catch from each other.

If you find over time that you are not able to change your behavior on your own, try some short term therapy to get to the bottom of your pessimistic attitude and make positive changes.

Each time a negative thought enters your head disregard it with a more positive one-then go to a mirror look yourself straight in the eyes and fire the negative part that is housed in there, make up a name like Whiner, say Whiner I no longer have any use for you and you are fired; I have hired a new super, positive and strong, up beat, always on cloud nine- new chap named George (or what ever name you have picked out) Then each time something trys to sneak in that's negative-Say to yourself George, buddy I am counting on you give me something good here and now! Surround yourself with positive friends and family. Stay away from people who are negative-if you can't do that then just don't allow them to feed off you, don't say a word, listen then tell them that you hope that things will change to a more positive out come. Better yet, share this new trick with them too. It sounds crazy, but it works, give it your all for 30 days and watch peoples reactions to your change-it will be amazing! You'll be much happier and more positive events will enrich your life too! Chin up, smile, this is only the beginning!

Well you can't can you! Or then you wouldn't be a pessimist but you would be an optimist.

And there lies the answer to your question. Optimist's look forward to the happy, nice, hopeful things in life.

Pessismist's only look back at the sad, nasty, awful things in life.

It's your choice really. When people say "how can I stop".. well the obvious answer is try.

Got it!

Start being thankful for every little thing you have.

Example: A person with eczema can stop thinking, "Ouch I hate my skin", and replace this with, "I love my skin, I'd look stupid and gross without my skin".

It does take practice, and affirmations help remove the "Negative self scripts" and replace them with scripts that will lead you to better pastures. Keeping the affirmation simple is best. "I'm beautiful", "I'm sucessful

Also, the music you listen to, TV/Movie programs to partake in will influence that little voice in your head. Sometimes it's helpful to "Unplug" for a day or two to recover.

Focus on the positive, rather than the negative; for every negative thing you think, try thinking of 2 positive ones.
