My internet sucks. I have Cox "High Speed" internet. The problem is that it is not wireless and it keeps losing the connection. The lights on the modem keep going out and its a miracle to get anything done. At random times the lights go out (loses connection), and then *slowly* the "recieve" light goes on. Then the "Send" light goes on. Then the "Online" flashes, but then all the lights go off again. I have no clue why it does this. anyone know? Serious answers please.

You are using a "cable" connection it sounds like. The reliability of your conection is fully dependent upon where you are in that circuit and how may other users are on the circuit. It is a shared high speed connection (they don't emphasize that!) and the more users or the further down the line you are, the worse your connection will be.

Your stuck! Of course you could switch over to DSL through your telephone provider. Will solve most of your current problems.

Check the power connection on the modem. Also, see if you can find out by usage on from your ISP. I had this problem on Comcast in Knoxville, the network was overloaded that it would drop requests. So despite the fact that we were on Comcast's fastest cable modem network, it ran like a snail, unless there weren't many people using it. Your cable network is probably using DOCSIS 2.0, there was a tool that I got online once that showed some interesting information about the network that may help you identify problems. Search the web for more info on this, but there's probably little you can do if your equipment is not faulty.

The problem is either a bad modem or most likely on your provider end. Call them and have them test the cable line to your modem. In the mean time you can download a free app called TCP Optimizer. This little app will optimize your pc internet connection. The link's here http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

I recently had to deal with this, same problems. Call in for tech support and schedule a visit, it's free if it's not your computer and I'm pretty sure it's not. What my/Comcast(cable company in CA) problem was a week amplifier at the distibution pole. They replaced it and no problems since. Good luck!
