my hamster has crawled up the stairs of my house several times by herself by breaking out of her cage (downstairs) and somehow she can climb the stairs, last night, she woke me up twice because she was in the bathroom, i keep on putting her back and resecuring her, but she is a smart hamster. but this time she is not in her usual place, in the second floor bathroom, i dont know what to do, she is a mastermind in getting to places but i love her so much, keep in mind that she can be almost anywhere somehow she is very skilled at climbing stairs despite being a normal sized golden hamster.

yay i found her! guess where she was? in a old broken computer hardrive I keep near the cage, it has an opening. What happened was I heard a noise and I was confused, it sounded so much like it was coming from the computer. Luckily im young and have a keen sense of hearing, so i just sat down and listened until I used a flashlight, and she crawled out like a bum being woken up by a mad landlord, she had a "I just woken up, hey whats going on kind of look". OMG she is just too cute to be mad at. I kissed her, fed her and tucked her into her cage, but the she didn't even pay me rent for her little hotel stay at my old hardrive, how rude!

Sounds like you've got a tiny Houdini on your hands!! They sure are smart, huh? And they plan their escapes, they always stuff their cheeks with as much food as they can cram in there before they make a break for it! Good luck, hopefully you'll find her before she destroys something - they like to chew up carpets in corners, and I had one that chewed a hole into a leather briefcase - my husband was NOT amused!!

If she is simply opening the door- then add a lock or some other fastening device. If she is chewing her way out, get her a wire cage....if she is bending the wires, reinforce them somehow. To find her, you can place her favorite food (count how many seeds) on the floor with flour around it is various places. The next morning look to see which piles are disturbed (shown by missing seeds or hamster footprints). Then you place her cage open and with a lot of food in it on the floor with a little set or steps youmake out of books up into her cage.

Get your hamster a proper place to be. There are pleanty of large cages for hamsters that are impossible for them to excape from. Cages only cost about ten bucks, while I'm sure a new carpet for your stairs would cost a whole lot more. Leave your hamster in her cage unless you are playing with her or watching her carefully. If she wants to get out, get her a ball where you can easily keep track of her, Also, block off the stairs with cardboard that she can't climb up over.

My hamster was the exact same way! My idea was to buy a new cage..that's all I can think of. But, one sad day my dog got the hamster but, it lived. So if you have a dog be careful!

Ok first things first. See how she is getting out. Put up a camera or something just see how it's done. Then try to fix the problem, now that you know what the problem is. If she still gets out.. check for holes and things like that. I hope this helps you =)

Find out how it's happening to prevent it in the future and buy a humane trap (Wal-Mart has them for around $11). Good luck!

find where she escapes from and either block it off, or get a clasp to secure the door, or buy a new cage like the crittertrail one.

add a lock, and to find her now, put small piles of food out in the open where she is sure to find them, if you havent found her by tomorrow morning, start CAREFULLY moving things around.
