A Carat (Karat in USA & Germany)is used as such for the weight of gem stones (1 carat is about 200 mg). For gold, it has come to be used for measuring the purity of gold where pure gold is defined as 24 carats.
FYI: The traditional way to describe the proportion of gold in alloys is in "carats". A carat is 1/24, that is 1 part in 24 by weight. Then:
• 9 carat is 9/24 gold, so it only contains 37.5% gold • 10 carat contains is 9/24 or 41.7% gold • 14 carat contain 14/24 or 58.3% gold • 18 carat is 18/24 or 3/4 gold or 75% gold (more durable) • 22 carat is 22/24 or 91.6% gold (it can be slightly soft)
Others carat o karat measurement are:
• 20 carat or 83.3% gold • 15 carat or 62.5% gold

48 is the complete highest for gold carat count, but it's nothing you can purchase @ your local mall or anything, its so rich it bends like laffy taffy. You have to order from places who specialize in products with gold like that.

It is true that 24K gold is the purest but it is so soft that it is impossible to form into jewelry. If you are planning on buying a ring or jewelry of some kind don't fall for those phony adds saying their product is 24K because it is impossible.

24 Karat but they don't use it in jewelery very often it is too soft. That is 100% Gold. 18 Karat Gold is 75% gold and they use that more often in jewelry and lower.
