We have a book/black history month report for school. We have to choose a black person or a non-black person that has helped the black community. But, we can't do the usual ones, like Rosa Parks, MLK, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, those people., and we can't do people like Alicia Keys or someone like that, someone that has paved the way to help the world. Help! And no stupid answers

Do a report on the first black soldier to serve as a high ranking officer in the Roman legions.

His name was Maurice and he was said to have carried the Holy Lance (or the Spear of Destiny - the one that supposedly pierced the side of Christ while on the cross). He was eventually declared a saint by the church. Very interesting and rich history with him...a sure fire A+ on your report.

Here's one link with info about him...I'm sure there are others:

Joseph Stark of Stark's General Store in Sedalia, Missouri. He took the composition of a black music teacher to St. Louis and had it published for him. ( IN the late 1800's, blacks could not publish). The composer was Scott Joplin, the father of Ragtime Music. Thanks to Mr. Stark, syncopation and the jazz movement began!
