If stereotyping is to be judgemental and to seperate one thing from another, what kind of benifits are there?

In example:
I hate snakes, and anything poisonous, so all snakes are poisonous. Thus, I will avoid them at all costs.

Given your example, stereotyping a snake in this matter COULD prevent you from getting bitten by a snake. However, stereotyping is always a fallacy. Even in your example, it is not true that all snakes are poisonous, so to rely on the stereotype is to rely on a mistruth. You might miss out on meeting a friendly snake, lol. Okay, just kidding there.

I find no benefit to stereotyping since, as I stated above it relies on an untruth and on assumption and therefore is not a reliable form of logic.

One benefit might be that if we hold a stereotype of a particular group of people and then meet someone from this group who does not fit the stereotype, it opens our minds and breaks away at the stereotype (which is a good thing).

Stereotype simple means " picture ". It is a statistical average of a group and is only given a bad connotation by the ideologically driven. Also, it is morally wrong to judge an individual by the average of his group. This does not mean that humans, who have this group average in mind, can not successfully apply it to their judgments in daily life. The trick is to judge; not become judgmental.

We all stereo type people and things. There are many things that fit the stereo types so it stands to reason that we judge things in that manner. I just keep an open mind for the exceptions.
