You have two choices, either early spring or late summer.

If you plant in the late summer you will get more strawberries the next year rather than waiting to plant in the spring because the plants will be established better. Thus, I always plant/replant in the late summer. Also late summer planting has less hassel with tring to battle the weather through dry/hot conditions to keep the new plants alive and fighting weeds. My experience says definitly fall.

Either way can be done though. New plants can be planted in April and watered well for the first few weeks till established. Keep the weeds out all summer, water well. In the late summer is when to plant the runners - (or new plants too) and do the same water and weeding advise as above. Also in the fall buy some straw and cover up the strawberries after the first frost to protect them in the winter. In the spring remove the straw when the temps start getting into the low 40's consistantly. Strawberries are a cold hardy plant so they thrive in the colder temps as long as it is not freezing and that is another reason to plant in the fall. Strawberries hate hot weather above 85.

I like planting strawberries in the spring best. They say you can plant them in the fall as well, but the plants just never seemed as healthy when I planted them in the fall. I would think it also depends on where you live. I live in Minnesota.

Gee it depends on what part of the country you live in. A handy guide is the farmers almanac. You can look up what region you live in, and then go to the outdoor planting guide to see when the best time to plant your strawberries or whatever.
