Fractions can only be subtracted if their denominators (the bottom number) are equal. If they are equal, you simply subtract the numerators (the top part) while leaving the denominator the same.
ex.) 1/7 + 3/7 = 4/7
If the denominators are not the same, you have to make them the same by finding the lowest common multiple of the denominators
ex.) 1/2 + 1/3 => 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6

denominators must be the same. subtraction is just addition of the additive inverse of a number

IE,

a - b

is the same as

a + (-b)

same as addition, you must have the same denominator

1/4-1/5=5/20-4/20=1/20
