They really aren't. it is a function of the brakes and the vehicle.

The brakes are made to stop a vehicle that is already big, and loaded to capacity with people and thier belongins. That's a lot of weight to stop.

the braking system doesn't know how loaded it is when the operator hits the brakes. Not only that, but unlike your car brakes, the brakes on a bus are hydraulic over air. Since air compresses, it more difficult for the driver to make adjustments to the actual weight he is trying to stop.

Believe me, he/she hates that jerking more than you do. They have to experience it all day everyday.

In addition to Lemar J's answer (two above this one), sometimes, a car pulls out in front of the bus, or people start walking without looking. It's really not the driver's fault. Yes, it is really annoying, but it's either the bus, or an outside factor. Sometimes, a passenger forgets to pull the string for a stop, so if you have a really nice driver (heavy emphasis on "really"), he or she will stop right away for you. But that just annoys the driver and the passengers.

Be black. Eat KFC, Get fat, wear a hat, and a glasses while driving. Wave at the opposite bus driver coming towards you, let student sneak in to the back of the bus, drive past wheel chair people, accept to those people that don't have a metro, and get free rides everyday.

It's not their bus, so they don't treat them well. Same with all bus drivers, not theirs, they're not paying for gas ect ect.

so the bus will stop in time, duh. large commercial vehicles use air brakes, which are effective in stopping the vehicle but take much more time to do it in then in say, your car or truck. however i don't know why they can't slow down gradually. mabye they're impatient?
