Someone will say "Your hair looks good." and I'll reply "It's so frizzy/ I don't take care of it like I should." or they may compliment my nails and I'll say "I dont really like the colors" or I'll point out the one that's broken. The other night my friend said she liked my makeup, and of course I said "I dont think I did a good job. I'm not good with makeup. I'm not a makeup person." I'm pretty modest and I get shy easily when someone openly admires something about me. Every time someone has something nice to say, it seems like I have to say something back to downplay their compliment- its almost as if I'm trying to tell them I dont deserve a conpliment, but I dont mean to. I dont know why I do that and I've been told "You cant even take a complimet." I truly dont know why and it bugs the heck out of me. Could it be that I'm not used to being noticed or I just dont like to be noticed? What are your thoughts on this?

I think you have a self esteem problem. You can't seem to stand someone to elevate you to a higher level, so you debase yourself.

I suggest that you get in front of a mirror. Look at your face and repeat to yourself, "I love you because no one else is like you and no one else can be you. You are unique and I love you for being so different. I love you because you are worth loving. I love you because Jesus loved you enough to die and rise from the dead for you. I love you because God doesn't make junk and if He loves me, then I love me."

Say this as many times as you need to until you are able to accept yourself for who you are.

Comes from low self esteem. Others see something in you that you refuse to see in yourself.
When you look in a mirror, can you look yourself in the eyes? If not, and I believe this is so, you have low self esteem. You can work on it, but it takes time. Start each day by telling yourself something that you like about yourself. Look at yourself in the mirror each morning and tell yourself just one thing that you like about yourself. It does not have to be long and involved, but something like, "What I love about you is that you have a lot of good friends". Something each day for now.
Good luck....

You need to work on your self esteem. You need to believe in your self and believe that you deserve the compliments. You also need to learn to say, "Why thank you, how kind of you to notice." You don't have to return a compliment with a compliment.

When I was young, I couldn't take a compliment. I assumed that saying a simple "thank you" been that I agreed with that a person and I would be admitting that I was conceited. It doesn't mean that. Just say a simple, "Thank you"
