It has never been cleaned. It is stinky and matted, stained yellow and grey and full of sawdust from tanning. I want it to be in good enough shap to let my kids play on it.

I use one similar to yours for a costume. It gets pretty matted during the year, though. So, what I do is gently brush it out with a wide toothed hair brush. I do take some hair off with this method, but I've been successful in returning it back to reasonable shape for 3-4 years running. I always put it out on the line and beat it for 20 minutes, too. That helps remove my little doggie's hair and fluff it up.

If it will fit in a washer you can wash it in cold water and then hang it to dry. Same as first answer.

Wow, I suppose you could put it in the delicate/gentle cycle using Woollite and then hang it up to dry, don't put it in the dryer.
