Here is one site where they have been at least 40000 feet deep. That is over 7.5 miles deep which does not even begin to get us close to the mantle of the earth. This is just a small portion of the crust of the earth.

The problem with drilling deeper is not about gravity, it is about the heat and pressure associated with the depths. The deeper you drill the more you risk of your machinery not being able to withstand the immense pressure and temperatures assoicated with the depth.

This attempt went 0.87 miles down and was about 1000 feet from where they should have been to pierce the mantle. Or to pierce the area known as the MOHO...this is where the transition between the crust of the earth and the mantle of the earth is.

We've drilled less than 1% of the distance to the center of the Earth, we have a long way to go. Eventually the gravitational force within the Earth would get to be too powerful to withstand, so there are limitations as to how far we could go.

As far down as hell.... and yes some people believed it at the time!
Scientists drilling in Siberia went too far and ended up punching a hole through to Hell, where the screams of the damned drifted up to them. A Norwegian schoolteacher visiting California heard that broadcast and took the story back to Norway with him. He then mailed it to a Christian magazine in Finland. In the form of a letter from a reader, it reached a Finnish missionaries newsletter. From there it returned to the United States, reaching both the TBN people and other evangelists who then claimed they had gotten it from a respected Finnish scientific journal.

we've drilled about 12 miles, I think... Some years ago there was a project to drill a hole in the seafloor, since that's where the crust is thinnest...

Probably only sent people down a mile or so.

The deepest people have been is The East Rand diamond mine in South Africa. Last I heard, it was reported to be 3,585 meters in depth, with many more miles of lateral passages. Of course, they continue to deepen it as they dig for more diamonds.
