The definition of music is a subjective thing; one thing we can say for sure is that rap is not intelligent or complex if it is to be called a musical art form. The more repetitive a composition, the less effort it takes to produce, the more negative its impact on the listener. As a pure musical expression, it is a reflection of a simple or non-present mind. This goes for rap and some electronic music as well, which sound at best manufactured and formulaic.

Conversely, the more a composition exploits factors like dynamic range, tempo, rhythm, and harmony, the more engaging it is to a receptive human mind and heart. However, to be able to be engaged by higher forms of expression, a person must have some degree of inner refinement in the first place. Lower perception cannot appreciate higher expression because it isn't able to see anything above it's own level. It's an expectation comparable to seeking blood from a stone.

Yes I do. Unlike many music snobs, and fans of worn out folk music I think it is the hottest thing alive.
The history of our nation and the sentiment of our people are recorded in our music. Blues has recorded the life of blacks in the depression. Bluegrass, folk, country, the history of our nation is all in there.
Sure you can sell folks like Eminem and 50cent short as braggarts with antiwomen lyrics if you wish but if you truly listen...
You will hear the human whithin. It is just hidden with machismo and bluster.
You see music is a mirror of societies values, priorities, and moral depth. If you find it deplorable to worship money, sex, and power I suggest one first looks in the mirror before blaming the gangsters and such. These values have been fed to us by universities, television, hollywood.
I think rap is great because it proves that a poor american can still make it big with talent (some would debate) and hard work.
Of course if daddy has paid for your ivy league or fancy music college perhaps it is easier to call them thugs with no talent. Especially if one is bitter because one's songs can only make it to coffee houses while rappers sell out arenas.

well rap certainly lacks some components of music,

however u cant say it is not usic just because the sound comes from a computer, any real instrument can be replaced by a computer and it would sound just like the real thing. a computer prog can make a tune that would sound just like a live classical music concert.
it just requires a different type of talent !

u d be surprised howe every genre of music uses the computer and that includes most subgenres of rock.
the computer has just become another instrument available for the artist.

No, it's not music. People always get mad when I tell them this, but rap is just talking with computer noises...Music has singing and REAL instruments, and all of those electronic noises are not music, it is just noises from a computer...no, it's not real music.

hell no. i don't think rappers have any talent whatsoever. they sing about drugs, sex, rims, and they are degrading to women. they don't really play any instruments, so it's not really music, just stuff from a computer.
