Rather than sleeping in class, you can doodle sketches of your professor and play Line Rider.
Seriously though, OneNote is a very useful piece of software that lets you take notes freehand, and draw diagrams. The amount of information you can store on a tablet PC is vastly greater than the capacity of a paper notebook.
But it really depends on your note-taking style. If the class has a lot of paper handouts, or if you tend to take very sparse notes, a tablet PC probably isn't going to be much use in class.
Also, if your campus has wireless, score one more for bringing a tablet PC to class.

It depends on what you are studying.
If you use your tablet pc to organize your time and priorities and study materials, then it will help you get more accomplished.
If you use your tablet pc to cheat, then it might help you get through a test but unltimately you will not get as much accomplished.
