This question could be answered in two ways. There is being "liked" and there is being "popular." They aren't the same thing. Well liked people are often not popular and popular people are often not well liked.
As far as being liked: Often it's just a matter of body language with many people. Some people consider a certain body posture agressive. Other people consider a person insincere or shady if they don't use enough eye contact. Stay confident with people, maintain eye contact, listen, but maintain an unagressive posture and vocal tone. Most people will like you if you do these things.
The reality is however, if you want to be "popular" you have to lower your IQ quite a bit in a social platform. Don't be yourself, because despite the addage, people don't think it's cool to be yourself. People like people who behave stereotypically (like they think men act or the way they think women act), because when you do not behave stereotypically, people find you unpredictable and you increase their guard. People prefer to hang out with people they can understand. People are morons. So if you want to be popular, (not just liked, but someone who gets invited to lots of things and gets called a lot), you have to tell stupid jokes, like pop culture, say superficial things about women, and abuse substances. Nothing says "cool" better than being on quick dial for a some morons pot hookup.
But if you're smart, you won't give a crap what people think. And your life will have substance.

Ask more questions of the person you're talking to, and talk less about yourself.

Repent to Christ. He is the only one you need to please. If you try to be a people pleaser...you will never be happy yourself...it is a sure way to self destruction.
