It's decoration for a Mardi Gras party. The large styrofoam balls are too expensive and balloons will pop. Any suggestions?

You could make balls with screwed up newspaper, thats cheap and will also give a more rustic effect as King Kong would not have perfect balls anyhow, sorry, and then you could paint them a natural typr colour or unless you want glitzy type King Kong you could use glitter in the paint, screw up the balls and either paper mache them to or just use masking tape to hold, painting will cover this up.
I suppose if you want them really big that might be too heavy, so if this is the case and time permits, paper mache ballons, that are blown to the required size, you can get the help of kids to make lighter work and get the job done quicker,

Balloons wont pop if you dont blow them up too large, they can be tied alond a string/rope by their little necks, that seems easier and quicker, I like that idea

Right now would be a great time to get those huge Christmas ornaments that measure about 4 or 5 inches and since they are plastic you can drill holes to make them so you can string them on thin rope.

I once purchased a small ball pit for my son. Those plastic balls that came with it would have been great. Maybe you can find someone getting rid of one.

Go buy cans of tennis balls from a dollar store and then you can spray paint them.

How about those plastic round christmas ordaments? I am sure they are on clearance at most retail stores.
