I'm pregnant......My neighbor irritates the crap out of me.... he smokes marijuana in his balcony and since our apartment is right next to each other, the smell and some smoke goes to our apartment.... will that harm my baby? I reported it before, but it seems like there's nothing stopping him.

Contact the police as often as necessary. Also contact the landlord/rental office as often as it happens. Keep records of everything. If you get no response from the landlord by sending notes or calling, send a certified letter stating your complaint.

READ YOUR LEASE! I cannot stress this enough... even if you are now on a month to month lease, the rules as outlined in your original lease still apply. In your lease there will be details of how you are to expected to bahave... your neighbor probably signed the same lease. In your lease there will be a clause that guarantees you the right of "quiet enjoyment" of your apartment. Some jerk doing drugs that are affecting you and that may be affecting your baby is taking away yuor right of "quiet enjoyment".

Complain as often as possible to anyone who will listen. Document everything. Every time it happens, every entity you call. If nothing else, your record keeping will help you get out of your lease easier than if you didn't have it.

Drugs are drugs. Anything that can happen to you can happen to the baby. Anything you eat, drink, or inhale is going to have an effect on your baby. If it were me, either this guy would go or I would. If he's doing it now, he's going to continue after your child is born and your child will be harmed.

Good luck.

You said that you reported it before but did you report it to the apartment manager or the cops? The apartment manager will probably not do much but a cop should at least look threw the apt to find any. The problem if the cops didn't stop him last time was because they didn't find any. Can't prove it if there ain't none. I'd tell the cops to come covertly and during a smoking time....invite them to stand on your balcony or in your house. Cops are trained to smell it so he can get a further search warrent just on the smell itself. Otherwise Its not hurting your baby now and even when your baby's born probably won't hurt him...but in no way is it doing any good for him either. Breathing in good air is always much better than bad! Make it go away, do whatever u have to do!

Obviously, when someone is pregnant, there is a tendency to be sensitive to all kinds of odors...and to being more than a bit irritable. As long as he is not smoking in your space, the mere odour alone will most likely cause no harm to you or your baby.

On the other hand, if you pursue this matter further, you may create a lot of harm both for your neighbor and for yourself. If you absolutely cannot stand what he is doing, it would be best if you moved.

It is NOT going to hurt you or your baby. You are not, after all, getting a second-hand high.

The smell, though, is an understandable irritation.

See if you can't convince him to switch to hash -- much less smelly. Or at least a better grade of weed...

(sigh)

Don't call the cops. They're unlikely to care -- here (Canada), I can't imagine they'd come out for anything short of a grow op -- and it's a lousy thing to do to a person. I very much doubt that he knows that the smell reaches your apartment; even if he's toking to help with a medical problem, most pot smokers don't want strangers knowing they smoke.

The thing to do is to go next door, and explain that you are pregnant, that the smell nauseates you, that he needs to smoke inside his own apartment, that if bothered by the smoke in his own place, many fine air purifiers are on the market. One polite request _should_ be all it takes, and pregnancy nausea -- that smell would pretty thoroughly sicken me right now -- makes it a very reasonable request. If you're skittish about talking to him, just leave a polite, anonymous note under his door about how obvious it is.

Finally, even though you're not actually inhaling, you might be amused by:

"Participants. Twenty-four Jamaican neonates exposed to marijuana prenatally and 20 nonexposed neonates.

Measurements and main results. Exposed and nonexposed neonates were compared at 3 days and 1 month old, using the Brazelton Neonatal Assessment Scale, including supplementary items to capture possible subtle effects. There were no significant differences between exposed and nonexposed neonates on day 3. At 1 month, the exposed neonates showed better physiological stability and required less examiner facilitation to reach organized states. The neonates of heavy-marijuana-using mothers had better scores on autonomic stability, quality of alertness, irritability, and self-regulation and were judged to be more rewarding for caregivers."

How about calmly talking with him in a neighborly way instead of tattling? It's all about tolerance and communication. After all, in the near future your side of the wall is probably going to be generating a lot of baby noise at all hours...

Can't we all just get along???

BTW: If he gets kicked out someone who uses hard drugs might move in, so maybe he isn't the best neighbor but he probably isn't the worst.

You obviously have some pot smokers in here who are offended by your questions. Apparently, they don't understand that YOU are offended by the smell.

Tell him that you're pregnant and that you find the smell offensive. Don't threaten to call the cops, yet. Simply ask if he can smoke inside of his apartment, because the smell is irritating you and your family. If he is beligerant, calling the cops is all you can do. If your neighbor wants to smoke, he should keep it indoors, or has he forgotten that smoking dope is illegal?

It is second hand smoke. Will it harm your baby or not can't be determined for sure, but what can be said that it can't be good for you or the baby. Call the cops again and tell them the situation.

Marijuana has been approved for use during pregnancy for the treatment of morning sickness, so no it will not harm your baby. Particularly at the concentrations you are talking about.

One night, when the smell is particularly strong....call the cops anonymously. Tell them you suspect your neighbor is doing drugs in his home because you smell it. Have the cops come to your place. When you see them get there...anonymously bring them inside and let them smell what you smell and explain where it is coming from. That should stop him once he gets busted.

That must be some THICK weed smoke to come into your house. It would normally just disipate in the air if he is smoking outside. Anyway....just call the cops while he is doing it.

If he is outside and the baby is inside, no it's not going to hurt the baby
