ok, so I have my BS in graphic design, and minors in mass communications and religion/theological studies. I have also taken a pretty in depth core of fine/studio arts classes.

now, if I am toying with the idea of becoming an art teacher for high schoolers or little kids (more so high school). what would I go for? or what program should I be looking at? I'm not sure where to start.

A Master's in Education will get you there in most states. Due to the teacher shortage, many states now do not require a bachelor's degree in education, but so many graduate hours - preferably an MEd - will suffice.

You can often concentrate in your education program on the type of work you would like to do - look for a school near you that trains teachers, not just administrators or coaches, and you will get what you need.

I recommend you contact a superintendent or principal in your area and start by asking them what they prefer, since they are often the ones who do the hiring (and it gives you a foot in the door when it comes to teacher placement and future jobs). And check with your state department of education for their requirements for teachers. Then find a school where you can take courses. A lot of schools will offer classes during the week around working schedules and then have residency requirements for a few weeks in the summer. These types of programs are typically affordable as well.

If you are interested in working at a Christian school or church (since you have a theology background) you may also want to check into an MACE (Master of Arts in Christian Education), which is available through seminaries. Seminary tends to be rather inexpensive (at least mine was, where I did my grad work).

Best wishes!

A masters of fine arts (MFA) would probably enable you to teach in a private schools (because many private schools don't require their teachers to actually have a degree in education). A masters of arts in educaiton with a specialty in fine arts would provide you with a degree in education and would enable you to teach at either public or private schools (as long as you're able to pass the licensing test in the particular state where you want to teach)

you can get a masters in education... that way you can teach college too if your want... i have a BS in graphic design too! and i taught a few years in college.

there's a little more money in college but i'm sure it's a little more rewarding to teach Young kids... Too bad art teachers are not in high demands these day.. With budget cuts and all, art and music is sadly left out of the curriculum.

you would need to get a degree in education. there are many MA/MS/MEd programs for people who did not study education at the undergraduate level but now wish to teach. however, because your undergrad degree is not in the discipline you want to teach you will be required to take courses that are strictly art related many of which will most likely be at the undergraduate level. look at the education homepages at schools you might want to attend and send them an email if you dont get enough information from the site.

I would think your next step would be to get a B.Ed. degree and become a teacher. With your background you should be able to do that in 12 months.
