A living thing (or a "biotic factor" in the environment) has five characteristics that set it apart from the nonliving things:
1) It can respond to external stimuli
2) It can reproduce (either sexually or asexually)
3) It takes in and uses energy, water, and minerals
4) It can grow and go through changes known as development
5) It is organized, and designed to perform specific life functions (the smallest level of organization is the cell).
These things help them to sustain life.
All things that do not have the above 5 characteristics are nonliving, or "abiotic factors" in the environment. These exist also becuase most of them are natural conditions on Earth (such as water, temperature, light, rocks) and have an effect on the living things around them.
Hope this helps!

What is the difference between you and a spoon? At the simplist level, living things have the ability to break down and use food. At any level of living, organisms has to have to food to survive, while a non-living thing, is just that inanimate.

What's the difference? Well, to tell you the truth, scientists are still debating that one. Pretty much every definition of 'life' they've come up with so far either includes something that isn't alive or excludes something that is alive. Right now the definitions people use in everyday speech are usually pretty fuzzy, and often conflict with each other. :\

Ok.
C is wrong.
There are actually 6 characteristics of life.
1- Organization
2- Energy Use
3- Homeostasis
4- Growth
5- Reproduction
6- Cells
Some things can have maybe one or more characteristic that are non-living.
But scientist say::
that these are ingredients for life.

Your question is too vague but here goes:
Living things are like bugs, trees and you. Non living is like iron, dirt or bricks, but we need all these things to make our lives better so they both exists.

If it's a living thing, it's a terrible thing to lose.
You'll find yourself sailing away on the crest of a wave--it's like magic. Rolling and riding, slipping and sliding--it's magic!
