It is very simple.
A hat trick is where one player gets 3 goals in one game. And then all the fans throw hats on to the ice.

A hat trick is when a single player scores three goals during a single hockey game. There is also a 'natural' hat trick. That is, the player scores all three goals in a row.
When a player in the National Hockey League (NHL) scores a hat trick, the fans, as a custom, toss their hats or caps on to the ice as a sign of their appreciation and respect. It's their way of recognizing the rarity of this feat.

A Hat trick is when the same players scores three goals in one game. It does not have to be in the same period, or consecutively. I am not sure why they call it a hat trick, but fans throw their hats onto the ice when a player scores three goals.
and a natural hat trick is a goal, an assist and a fight in one game.

a hat trick is when a player scores 3 goals in one game(soccer or hockeyor anything you can score goals in). It used to be 3 goals in a row, without anyone else scoring. Now it is just 3 goals. Thay call 3 in a row now, a natural hat trick.

yeah what everyone else said is right. but heres another fact that will hopefully earn me the ten points. the term hat trick started in the late forties, when a business owner (don't know his name or company) started a promotion in toronto. he started to give away free hats if a player scored 3 goals in a game.
