I think you mean how can you check that the website is not a spoof of a real website - for after all, all websites are just as real as any other.

I used to get a spam message all the time from something like security.ebay.com.x456dgdfg.com

It doesn't matter what is on the left, always start reading a URL from the right - whatever comes before the .COM or .ORG or .NET is the website. In this case, x456dgdfg.com was the website and it was not from eBay at all.

if in doubt, leave the website and call the company from printed material they may have sent you.

If you're on a site that says it's from paypay or ebay or your bank or whatever and it's asking for you to sign in, look for a small key icon near the bottom right corner of your browser window. It should be above and to the left of your clock. If it's not there, the site is either a fake or not secure.

You can also double click on the lock icon and get more information about the site's security stuff.
