Be sensitive to the fact that she's going through something horrible and won't necessarily be herself for awhile. Give her some extra leeway to be snippy, tired, cranky, mournful, etc. Let her talk it out, or respect her silence about it.

One no-no: Don't say "I know how you feel," even if you've lost your own dad. It sounds like you're discounting someone's pain.

Be there for her. Listen, even if she repeats things over and over. It's part of grieving. Grief is a process which includes: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Everyone does it in their own way and own length of time. It's very sad. I'm sorry for her!

You try your best to cheer her up while giving her time to express herself emotionally and time to think things through. There are places to go, things to do, and a future to look forward to. Take your time and let her realize you're trying to be there for her no matter what. Be a good listener! =)

Post Script: sorry about your friend! =/

there really arent any words to consol her right now. like everyone else suggested, just let her know you are there when she needs you. try to keep her from being alone.. maybe pick up her favorite ice cream or candies. another idea... get a pic of her and her father (maybe from a family member) and have it framed for her.

The only thing you can do is be there for them as much or as little as they want you there. Ask them if there is anything they want or need, and just be there and be a friend.
