So emo... what does it mean? is it a style of music or a way to dress. i only ask this because i believe its music... and my frends belive its a style or so they think they can make it one. which i dont see how you can dress emo considering it means EMOTIONAL! you cannot dress emotional. like if you were to dress suicidal. would you slice your arms up and show it off saying your dressing suicidal? its impossible. punk and goth prep and whatever else may be a style but they have been since like forever. how can emo change because of one persons opinions and jazz like that? i want what you think on this. am i right or wrong?

This may make it easier to understand. This is a metaphor I made to describe the appearances and attitude of the related subcultures:
Punk is the oldest child, born in the late 70's-early 80's. He is tough and doesn't put up with anyone's BS. He doesn't wear entirely black but does have a somewhat dark aura about him.
Goth is the middle child. Born in the early-mid 80's. She is way more passive than her older brother, Punk. She loves black and other dark colors. She prefers to keep to herself and finds beauty in her world of darkness.
Emo is the youngest child, born in early 2000. He is very effeminate and whiny. He likes to wear girl pants, an ugly haircut, and a lot of black and bright neon colors. Emo sort of follows along in his big sister's footsteps...he lives in a world of darkness but hates it. Goth is often mistaken for Emo, and Goth hates it.

It seems to me that "Emo" is, as far as fashion, a mix of Goth and Punk. The Emo kids are into black clothing but also add some color and do some wild things with their hair like the Punk crowd did. The thing that disturbs me is that a lot of kids think that to be "Emo" you have to carve on yourself with razor blades or such. This is total BS!
I like some of the fashion and music but the self mutilation 'to feel something" is total crap!

It is slightly possible to dress "emo", but only if you know what your doing. For example: If you dress in dark blues and maybe some black mixed in for added dramatic effect, you could say you are depressed. Dressing up in bright yellow, orange or reds could symbolize extreme love or even happiness. Greens would indicate your subconscious desire for growth and self-improvement. To answer your question though, it's both.

punk is not a style!!!!! r u ****** kidding me!?!?! emo stands for emotional hardcore, a type of music. yea, ur right, emo is not a style or anything, its a type of music.

emo people usually wear tight pants, cut their rist's and dress in all black and think about suicide...
and i think listen to heavy metal or/and love songs. something like that!
