I think the time span is too narrow. You also need to consider the culture. Work was divided by who could do it. Physical labor went to the strong. If you could not "pull your weight", hopefully you were smart enough to do something else. Part of that is where service and business came into play. Women normally are smaller and weaker than men. They also are vulnerable during pregnancy. This means that they cannot do the work without risk to themselves as well as the future generation. Women worked hard, but the type of labor was different. The industrial revolution was about to take off. There were inventions like crazy during this time. For all intents and purposes, the world was turned upside down. Medicine proved, or at least thought they did, that women were about as intelligent as a gorilla. There was a big push to lower a woman's position in society, as if it were not low enough to start. Just check history. See what was going on in industry, medicine, science, and politics.

I think they did this because most jobs then were physical labor and they didn't have childcare and so the women stayed home and took care of the children and house and the men went out and worked.
