When I started playing guitar, I found that I wanted to practice more if I worked on learning a song that I really loved. Find a song that really means a lot to you and that is reasonably simple enough to learn as a beginner.

This will go a long way in making practice more rewarding to you.

I just started playing in the summer. Being the dummy I am, I started on a 12 string. So I started out with chords. I used a couple of web sites that had some guitar beginner sons like House of the Rising Sun, etc to get going. When I bought my 6 string, I started using TAB to do songs that involved more finger-picking (I like that better. Lets me play Eric Clapton, The Beatles - Blackbird, etc). I haven't yet played a scale. I don't know how to! There's so many ways to approach guitar, I'm not sure what the next step is. I can't strum to save my life but I can finger pick no problem. Everyone is different I guess. Ultimate-guitar.com is a good site for downloaing tablature. Chord-

ur hands will get soar so soak them in warm water after. Don't stress if you can't get the exact cord string sound perfectly.Don't focus on one cord try a whole different. That way you could find out what cord your most comfortable playing. A hour and a half a day will help. Also play songs you like. You'll have more fun playing.

I'd start by buying a guitar chord book. Learn all the majors, minors, sevenths, and the different ways to play each of those. Get good with playing chords first, then move on to learning scales. You can take lessons, or learn on your own with books and by listening to records.

Practice at least a 1/2 hour every day...and increase. Obtain a good teacher...and listen to acustic guitar music.

I will add that a DVD can be worth it's weight in gold.......buy a book that has a DVD with it......actually SEEING somebody show you how it's done is a huge help (if you're not taking lessons). It's easy to develop "bad habits" in the beginning....watching how it's done on a DVD can keep this from happening.
